I’m all about the originals, but when you can find a quality riff on an original and it’s made in the USA while the original is produced overseas, well I can make an exception for that. And the Birdseye 1/4 Zip Sweater from Castaway Clothing is one of those exceptions, a riff on a classic that’s made right here.
The birdseye knit sweater or, to many, the Norwegian sweater, has been a prep staple ever since L.L.Bean introduced it. The Castaway version of this icon adds a couple twists, the first being that it is knit in Fall River, Massachusetts. The second, most obvious twist is the quarter zip design, turning the sweater into a versatile pullover. The quarter zip is made from heavy cotton knit, so it won’t be as warm as wool but it will serve as a warm layer underneath a jacket and a useful outer layer on unseasonably warm days. Castaway even adds a nod to the brand’s Nantucket Red connection by making the trim on the zipper a washed red reminiscent of the iconic island shade. There’s always going to be a spot for the original, but when a tweak is made this good it doesn’t hurt to add another.
