Golf Course Essentials

The first golfers have already teed off at Congressional and the U.S. Open is officially underway.  Now that I’ve got the basics covered, it’s time to move on to some of those other accessories that will come in handy on the course.  You can get by without some of these items, but I’d highly recommend you don’t try.

1. Socks by Kentwool ($19.95):  This is one of the few times I will actually be advocating wearing socks.  While you shouldn’t wear socks with your bucks or your boat shoes, you should most definitely wear them on the course.  These socks are the flagship socks of the PGA and Nationwide Tour and leave your feet feeling fresh and comfortable.

2. Sports Mesh Hat by Titleist ($26):  Available in a variety of colors, this hat will help keep the sun out of your eyes on the course.  While you can opt for any number of other golf brand hats, I prefer the classic look from Titleist.

3. Golfing Gophers Needlepoint Belt by Tucker Blair ($95):  You need something to keep your pants up on the course and there’s not much better than a needlepoint belt.  One of my favorites is the Golfing Gophers belt by Tucker Blair.  As Bill Murray so eloquently put it, “In the immortal words of Jean Paul Sartre, ‘Au revoir, gopher’.”

4. Koozie (Prices vary):  Much of the time golfing is as much about spending time with good friends and throwing back a few brews as it is about playing the game itself.  Whether you’re drinking on the course or at the 19th hole, you’ll want a koozie to keep your hands warm while you keep your beer cool.  Koozies from Vineyard Vines, Southern Point and Coast Apparel are just a few of the options out there.

5. The Downhill Lie by Carl Hiaasen ($9.74 from Amazon):  Not really an essential for the course, this book is a great read for those times when you can’t get out on the course.  Hiaasen chronicles his return to the game of golf after a 32-year layoff.  You’ll find yourself laughing with the turn of every page as hilarity ensues.
