The Creighton-Wichita State rivalry is a relatively young one. Though the two teams have been members of the Missouri Valley Conference from 1945 to 1948 and then again since 1976, the rivalry only really started to take off in the early 2000’s. At the time Creighton (along with Southern Illinois) was the top dog in the conference and new Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon set out to unseat the favorites. The focus fueled the rivalry as both teams have emerged as mid-major powers in arguably one of the best mid-major conferences.
Saturday’s match up is the final game of the regular season for each team, the second time they’ve met this year (Wichita won 67-64 on January 19) and the 99th overall meeting between the two (Creighton holds the all-time lead, 52-46). While both teams are pretty much locks to make the tourney, they’ve been heading in different directions over the past month. Creighton has lost four of its last six while Wichita State has won five in a row (after losing three in a row prior to the current streak). Expect a contentious contest between two Midwestern mid-major powers that will make for some must-watch Saturday basketball.
