Old Nation M-43

In 2012, my father-in-law, brother-in-law and myself went to Detroit to drink beer and watch hockey. One of our stops found us at Detroit Beer Co. and we loved it, sipping delightful beers after a disappointing stop at Hockeytown. But when we returned to the city in 2015 to drink beer and watch basketball, we found a completely different brewery. Either we had just been too new to craft beer to know good from bad or things had seriously went downhill, but this was not the Detroit Beer Co. we had fell in love with the first time. Bird Dog Bay American Labs Bow Tie

When I visited Bird Dog Bay back in 2014, the brand was manufacturing all of its bow ties overseas. The reasoning was that the quality of the printing was not nearly as good in the US as it was in China. In the meantime Bird Dog Bay has been on the hunt for artisans in the US that could match the quality and had found several for other parts of the business. Three years later they have finally found a domestic bow tie manufacturer that convinced them to bring production home, resulting in a new batch of homemade bow ties, including the American Labs Bow Tie. Hudson Sutler Old Glory Commuter Duffel

The Old Glory Commuter Duffel follows in the well-established footsteps of several other American-themed duffels from Hudson Sutler. First there was the Yanks, then the Lake Placid (plus you could add in the Ross Cooler). The New York-based brand sure knows how to celebrate the USA and the Old Glory is no exception. Bonobos Lightweight Chambray Shirt

Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods wasn’t the only shocking move made last week. Buried beneath all that hype was Walmart’s seemingly random purchase of Bonobos. It was shocking to say the least (at least if you hadn’t heard the rumors it was happening a little while ago). There don’t seem to be two brands more dissimilar than the two, especially in terms of style.  Continue reading

Urban Artifact Sliderule

When The Complete Beer Course hit shelves in 2013, author Joshua Bernstein offered up one tasting option in the gose section and remarked, “I’m not going to make you run around like a headless chicken to find a second gose.” Funny how times have changed.  Continue reading

Castaway Clothing Island Madras Chase Shirt

Back in the days before Madras became known as Chennai, the eponymous fabric of the city was still woven using hand looms. But even while madras tends to hearken back to a time where craftsmanship was prized, the truth is that most “madras” fabric today is made in factories using machines. When the team at Castaway Clothing approached the Original Madras Trading Co. to source fabric for a line of madras shirts, they wanted to do something a little different and reach back into history. Continue reading

Bell’s Mars

What’s old is new again. At least that seems to be the case lately, particularly in the Midwest. Beers that were more or less considered one time offerings have begun to appear on shelves again. Doom, a barrel-aged double IPA that was part of Founders’ Backstage Series, has been resurrected as part of the brewery’s Barrel-Aged Series (let’s hope the trend continues and CBS is one of the two yet to be named entries in that series). Regional staple Gluek is making a return to the Twin Cities. Stone brought back a ton of retired beers to celebrate its 20th anniversary last year. Even nationally Zima is set to be brought back from the dead. But the first beer that tipped this trend off to me was Mars, a double IPA from Bell’s that originally appeared in 2014. Collared Greens Classic 9″ Shorts

These pages have been a bit quiet lately. A combination of work, visiting family, an almost two-year-old and a newborn (plus a healthy does of Master of None) have conspired to zap most of my time the past couple weeks. Hopefully now that some of those factors have slowed down I’ll get back to being a bit more consistent, but if you don’t hear from me for stretches of time, just know it’s because I’m now changing double the diapers. Continue reading
