Pitchers and catchers reported last week and baseball is that much closer to being back. There’s a lot to be excited about this year. The Cubs solidified a young core with Jason Heyward. The Pirates are bringing back their pillbox caps for select games. And speaking of pillboxes, there’s a new painted sporting equipment company in the Midwest, Pillbox Bat Co.
While other similar brands like Mitchell Bat Co. and Hudson Hockey Company tend to go with more team-inspired designs, Pillbox Bat Co. takes a more artistic approach that expands beyond sports and is more akin to what Sanborn Canoe Company does with its canoe paddles. Take the Old Glory. This solid maple bat is crafted in the USA and then hand-painted in Winona, Minnesota (the former home of the Winona Clippers and Winona Pirates professional teams).
The Old Glory takes its design cues from the American flag, with red pinstripes on a field of white, buttressed by bands of navy dotted with stars. It’s as American as apple pie, hot dogs, and, well, baseball. It’s the perfect centerpiece for above the mantle, but Pillbox encourages you to take it out and use it for a pickup game. At least when you strike out, you’ll look good doing it.
