State Optical Co. has an ambitious vision for the Midwest. Starting with its Chicago-based eyewear factory, the brand hopes to turn Chicago and the surrounding area into a world class eyewear producing region. The hope is that other brands join State, followed by acetate and hinge manufacturers setting up shop close to the action. It’s a grand vision and one that bodes well for the Midwest should it happen.
The first step in that vision is to establish State Optical Co., something that is already well on its way to happening thanks to products like the Wolcott. These sunglasses, inspired by Chicago architecture, feature exaggerated beveling and slight tapering that add a modern touch to a classic frame. Custom German-made hinges help prevent the temples from loosening over time and the frames use Zeiss lenses, which set the industry standard. The premium acetate frames are available in four colors with a variety of lenses to match as well and each features the brand’s signature 21-hole triangle, a nod to Illinois’s status as the 21st state, on the temple. While currently not available directly from State Optical Co., the Wolcotts can be purchased at a variety of retail outlets. The vision for these sunglasses and State Optical Co.’s vision is crystal clear.
