You Ought to Be Reading: Backwoods Plaid

Backwoods Plaid Rhon Bell

City living doesn’t really lend itself to much time spent in the great outdoors, but when I’m pining to escape the urban environment and view awe-inspiring photography of sleepy coasts and forested mountains, I turn to Backwoods Plaid.  Rhon is my go to source for tips on outdoor equipment and photographic escapes when I can’t leave the city.  Based out of Maine, Backwoods Plaid captures Rhon’s adventures exploring life in the Pine Tree State.  The posts are full of pictures guided by short narratives.  They have inspired me to get out of the city and explore the local natural beauty and I’m sure they will do the same for you.

Great Lakes Prep:  Why did you start a blog?
Backwoods Plaid:  I’m an outdoors fanatic. I, also, can’t sit still. This provides me plenty of opportunities to take photographs which I wanted to share. As a recent college grad who likes to write, I thought the story line and commentary aspect would keep my mind active and busy.

GLP:  Where are you from?
BP:  A small town in Maine. My graduating class was eighteen.

GLP:  What do you do outside of your blog?
BP:  My blog represents my life fairly well – fishing, camping, hiking, sailing. My hobbies are ever changing, but my newest and most time consuming hobby is brewing my own beer.

GLP:  How would you describe your style?
BP:  I consider my style to be classic 1890’s – 1940’s. I like the style of American loggers and woodsmen. They were good with their hands, self-sufficient, and worked their asses off. They wore tall boots, much like my L.L. Bean Maine Hunting Shoes, tucked their pants in and always wore a flannel shirt. I try and spice that with some modern style elements.

GLP:  Who are your style icons?
BP:  Ralph Lauren. He’s remains cool and looks good simply with a  plaid shirt, jean jacket and a good pair of denims. It only helps that he’s an amazing entrepreneur with a ranch.

GLP:  What advice would you give anyone looking to start a blog?
BP:  I like photos and creative writing, but I don’t want to read a book. Keep it interesting, short and to the point. Take good photos.

GLP:  Bow tie or neck tie?
BP:  Neck tie; plaid.
